Chances are most people that go to see Terry Gilliam's new film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" are seeing it because they want to see Heath Ledger's final performance, rather than interest in the film's plot or setting. This was Ledger's final film role as he tragically died in January of last year, before completing his work on this film. In his place, actors Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell took up where he left off, each playing a different interpretation of Ledger's character "Tony" and offering their wages from the film to Ledger's young daughter Matilda. The media has covered the re-casting story more than the actual film. Having seen the film this recasting focus isn't such a bad thing. Without the curiosity surrounding Ledger's final performance and the three highly respected actors continuation of his role, 'Imaginarium ' wouldn't be worth more than a weekly rental for most people. The story is often incoherent, the script doesn't leave much for character development or for Heath Ledger, the ending leaves something to be desired, and the visual effects while impressive are nothing we haven't seen before in Tim Burton films that predate this film, with Burton's upcoming, similarly "wacky-world" themed "Alice in Wonderland" looking to trump Gilliam's film in the visuals area. Gilliam obviously has grand ideas about the world, lore, characters and history contained within this movie. Unfortunately the audience are only given brief peeks into the parts that look truly interesting; namely inside the mirror of the Imaginarium, where whoever enters is treated to a dream-like world where everything is like they ever wanted. It's in these Imaginarium sequences that Depp, Law, and Farrell take over from Ledger and I for one was disappointed that Depp's performance, in particular, was painfully brief. The film is paced very strangely, and instead of Ledger, Depp, Law or Farrell, who we all came to the movie to watch, we are instead treated to strung out scenes between actress Lily Cole and Andrew Garfield with little to no chemistry. This, however, is the script's fault and Garfield can be added to the list of promising young actors of 2009, such as Star Trek's Anton Yelchin. Christopher Plummer, who plays the movie's titular character Doctor Parnassus, seems to channel elements of Albus Dumbledore in parts of the movie and oh yeah, Mini Me (Verne Troyer) is also in the movie. It might seem that I hated the film but I didn't. It's just a completely average fantasy film, no better or worse then other fantasy films like 'The Golden Compass" or "The Spiderwick Chronicles'. It's just disappointing that this is neither the swan song performance from Ledger, nor a hoped for return to form for Terry Gilliam who made his career with classics such as "Brazil", "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" and the Monty Python series. Ledger fans best stick to "The Dark Knight" 3/5 stars.
