Why, oh why, did I watch this? And the whole thing too, good Lord...this has got to be one of the most unfocused and stupid efforts I've seen in a while. There are no redeeming values to this at all, & the plot/story/whatever, is all over the place.
Our story begins with Halloween night, with big sister answering the door & handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, while brother Jonathan labors over the carving of a pumpkin for quite some time, apparently some work of art, I guess. Obnoxious boyfriend of big sister comes by, makes an ass of himself, feels her up, and then she tells him she'll meet him later. But something shows up in big sister's room while she's getting ready, some menacing character with a knife and a pumpkin head, and Jonathan comes to the rescue & stabs the guy to death, including a good poke in the eye, only to discover that whoops, it's the obnoxious boyfriend, playing a joke. That'll teach him.
Fast forward a bit in time, and we have our family relocated to the little town of Carver, apparently in the middle of nowhere, more or less, and it's Halloween again. Jonathan & his sister almost run down some old man who lost his load of pumpkins, so of course they stop to help him & listen to him rant, and then move on, because there's a big party being thrown at some old farm or something, and that's their destination. There's some haphazard preparations, like half-heartedly selecting some mediocre little pumpkins to carve; a chance meeting between Jonathan & some hottie; the hottie's ex-boyfriend, a jerk of the first caliber, makes the scene, roughs Jonathan up, etc. Then the party begins, and everyone is getting obliterated, but then this old man that Jonathan & his sister ran into shows up & takes Jonathan into his workshop, as he apparently owns this land, and tells him that he's a carver, just like him. Jonathan allows that his father taught him this when he was about 6, but his dad mysteriously disappeared a few years ago & nobody ever found him. Ooh...so does dad pop up as the culprit behind all this? Oh HELL no, it's never mentioned again.
Of course, one by one, some of the party-goers (not the ones dancing to the band, apparently, just the ones in the cast) meet with nasty demises, and they have pieces of their faces removed, yecch.
What bugs me the most about this film though, is that when Jonathan is unloading the groceries, he's startled by the appearance of some horrific being that isn't really there, & he drops the groceries...one of the items that rolls away & is picked up again is a 2-liter bottle of orange soda? Who is this movie drank the orange soda? I don't think there was anyone with less than a 1.0 blood-alcohol level in evidence.
Anyway, there's a twist ending to this that is not to be missed (or believed).
For what was apparently a halfway decent budget, you would THINK that this could have been a better film. But there's so many gaping holes & unresolved questions that it boggles the mind. I'm debating whether I should trade this in or snap it in half. I'll sleep on that, I guess. 1 out of 10.
