Satirical portrait of the notoriously efficient Germans while on vacation duty

Bavarian comedian Gerhard Polt and director Hans-Christian Müller team up again to deliver a sardonic look at West German middle-class life, this time during the well-deserved Mediterranean holiday: beer-bellied bank clerk Löffler and his family spend their last free day on the beach basking in the sun, day-dreaming about infidelity and anxiously watching their already loaded car in case one of those uncivilised Italians might try to steal it.

The Teutonian-invaded seaside resort turns into a microcosm of proudly narrow-minded tourist stereotypes: the continuously inebriated barbecue proles, the elderly couple playing cards and muttering spiteful remarks about Italians, the importunate cosmopolitan wind-bag. All those lovable master-race characters are accompanied by the artefacts of Germanic holidays: sunscreen and glossy tabloids, Bavarian food and garbage-littered beaches, traffic jam reports on the radio.

"Man spricht deutsch" is a pleasantly malicious anthology of comical dagger stabs that unerrignly manages to caricature without denunciating. Unfortunately, some in-jokes will escape most foreign viewers. The acting and directing are far from exceptional, but make for a sophisticated cabaret experience.

Polt's second study of German middle-class madness could have yielded a brilliant half-hour comedy show, but lacks the dramatic unity of his earlier effort "Kehraus", and as a feature film suffers from overlength and slightly repetitive gags. A magnificent, somewhat disordered self-portrait, "Man spricht deutsch" will lose some of its appeal on a second screening, given that the viewer did not die laughing halfway through the first.
